Fehmarnbelt Tunnel: $7.1 Billion Road and Rail Tunnel 

The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel, as it’s been called, is said to be the world’s longest immersed tunnel that will connect Denmark and Germany when it opens in 2029.

According to reports, the 11.2-mile tunnel will be the longest combined road and rail tunnel anywhere in the world. Construction started in 2020 with a total budget of $7.1 billion USD. Fehmern A/S, the state-owned Danish company in charge of the project.

The report further mentions that the tunnel passes underneath the Baltic Sea and will connect Fehmarn in Germany with the island of Lolland in Denmark.

Traveling through the tunnel will take 7 minutes by train and 10 minutes by car, replacing a 45-minute ferry ride. It will have a dual-track railway and a four-lane motorway.
