Spotify Hits 515 Million Monthly Active Users

Spotify is a Swedish-based provider of proprietary audio streaming and media services. Spotify offers a vast digital library of copyright-restricted audio content, comprising more than 100 million songs and five million podcasts sourced from record labels and media companies. While basic features are free and come with advertisements and limited control, additional features such as offline and commercial-free listening are available via paid subscriptions.

The platform’s availability spans across most of Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania, with a total presence in 184 markets. However, unlike traditional music sales where artists earn a fixed price per song or album sold, Spotify pays royalties based on the number of artist streams as a proportion of total songs streamed. According to Spotify’s report today, as of March 31st, over 515 million individuals worldwide use their streaming service each month, representing a 22 percent increase from the previous year or 5 percent compared to the last quarter.

CEO Daniel Ek expressed his satisfaction with the results, stating that they exceeded the company’s projected growth by 15 million and marked the second most extensive quarter of user growth in Spotify’s history. In addition, the report revealed that the number of paying subscribers has grown to 210 million, a 15 percent increase from the previous year.
