Australia: $15 Million Airbnb Fine

Airbnb has agreed to pay a $15 million Australian Dollar fine to customers. This is as a result of misleading information on the short term rental company’s website. The price of some listings appeared in USD rather than Australian Dollars, which led to customers being overcharged for their accommodation.

The overcharge affected 70,000 bookings and 63,000 Australian users from January 2018 to August 2021. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission mentioned that Airbnb will reach out to eligible customers for compensation within the next 45 days. However, individuals who believe they may have been affected and have not been contacted by that time can also reach out to the firm directly.

Airbnb apologized and said they are committed to “price transparency”. Airbnb is an online platform where individuals and families can list their homes for short or long-term rental.
