The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is a legal trade union in the Country that represents the intentions of the working population and is also responsible for improving the conditions of their employment. The organization consists of 50+ industrial unions and was founded in 1978 with its headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
Some organizations within the NLC are Nigeria Union of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG (they manage fuel distribution across the country), National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees, NUBIFIE, etc.
According to multiple reports, the NLC reached a decision to embark on a 2-day warning strike starting today September 5 2023, in response to the deteriorating living conditions of the country’s workforce. The report cites the removal of the fuel subsidy earlier in the year as a primary reason for their action, with a notice of an indefinite strike later in September 2023 if their demands from the Federal Government are not met.
