Airbnb Sues New York City

Airbnb Inc is a San Francisco-based company that connects hosts offering accommodations and experiences with travelers seeking unique and personalized stays. Airbnb enables individuals to monetize their properties by renting them out to travelers for short or long-term stays. The platform boasts an extensive range of listings, spanning from cozy apartments in bustling cities to charming cottages nestled in picturesque countryside settings.

Airbnb has taken legal action by filing a lawsuit against New York City, in response to what it deems a stifling new law set to take effect in July 2023. The company is concerned that the city’s new law is an unrealistic ban on short-term rentals, which will severely restrict the number of individuals who can serve as hosts in the city.

According to Reuters, among the requirements in the legislation, hosts will need to register with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement (OSE) and provide certification of their commitment to complying with complex zoning laws, multiple dwelling law, housing maintenance code, construction code etc.
