Google has announced plans to build the first subsea fiber optic cable called Umoja to connect Africa to Australia as it aims to improve internet connectivity on the continent.
The Umoja cable will be anchored in Kenya and will pass through Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa before crossing the Indian Ocean to Australia. This development will enable African countries to connect with each other and the rest of the world.
The report further mentions that Google worked with Liquid Intelligent Technologies to complete the terrestrial path for the African countries. While the path through the Indian Ocean is underway and is expected to be completed in 2026.
