China: World’s Largest Electric Container Ship

The Greenwater 01 is the world’s first fully electric container ship, developed and manufactured by the state-owned China Ocean Shipping Group (Cosco). COSCO is a shipping company that was formed after a merger with China Shipping Group in 2015, with its headquarters in Shanghai.

According to reports, the Greenwater’s propulsion system is powered solely by batteries housed in a 20-foot container and has a capacity of 80,000 kWh of electricity. This saves 15 tons of fuel compared to a standard container ship. Additionally, it has a fire detection and alarm system designed for the battery compartment due to challenges posed by lithium iron phosphate batteries.

The vessel is now operating a regular service route between Shanghai and Nanjing, aiming to significantly reduce emissions along its journey.
