The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is a legal trade union in the Country that represents the intentions of the working population and is also responsible for improving the conditions of their employment. The organization consists of 50+ industrial unions and was founded in 1978 with its headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
According to recent reports, on November 13, 2023, the National Executive Council meeting of the labor unions resolved on a strike action, and 19 unions have so far responded to an indefinite strike in response to the government’s failure to meet their demands, the deteriorating living conditions of the country’s workforce, and the recent crisis in Eastern Nigeria that led to the alleged brutality of the NLC president and some members of the labor union.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics. 7. The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria. 8. National Association of Academic Technologists. 9. National Union of Postal and Telecommunication Employees. 10. Nigeria Union Of Local Government Employees. 12. Nigeria Union of Public Service Reportorial, Secretarial, Data Processors and Allied Workers. 13. National Union of Textile Garments and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria. 14. National Associations of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives. 15. National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees. 16. Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria. 17. The National Union of Electricity Employees. 18. Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria. 19. Nigeria Union of Railway Workers.
The strike is expected to have a ripple effect on key sectors of the economy.
