Uber, the ride-hailing company, has been fined $324 million USD by the Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) in the Netherlands for transferring personal data of European drivers to the United States.
According to reports, the investigation was initiated on behalf of complaints from over 170 French Uber drivers. The transfer of personal data to the United States and failure to safeguard the data violates the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The report further mentions that Uber can appeal the decision with the DPA, and if unsuccessful, can then file a case with the Dutch courts. The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) is responsible for enforcing data protection regulations in Netherlands, including the General Data Protection Regulation.
