According to reports, the Philippine government has banned online casinos due to their links with illicit activities, from telephone scams to human trafficking and criminal activities. The casinos, known as Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs), cater to overseas players in mainland China where gambling is illegal.
The report further mentions that the nation’s gaming operator will cancel the license of POGOs and wind down operations by the end of 2024. The government also promised to find alternative jobs for Filipino workers who will be affected by the shutdown.
