According to the notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), as a result of a manufacturing defect, the airbags may explode during deployment and potentially result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. There have been reports of deaths and injuries as a result of this defect.
Affected vehicles include 2015 6 series gran coupe, 2014 5 series gran turismo, and 2014 5 series sedans equipped with airbag inflators manufactured by Takata corporation. BMW will replace the front airbags free of charge with notification letters scheduled to be sent in the coming weeks.
Last week, Incognito blog reported a recall affecting over 390,000 BMW vehicles due to similar airbag inflator issues.
