Caribbean: Hurricane Beryl Makes Landfall

The Caribbean is a subregion of the Americas that includes the Caribbean Sea and its islands (West Indies), the Greater Antilles, the Lesser Antilles, the Bahamas, and the coastal areas of Central and South America. It has a population of over 44 million residents as of 2023.

According to reports, a Category 5 storm named Hurricane Beryl has caused severe damage on several islands in the Caribbean on Monday, July 1, 2024. Hurricane Beryl tore through Carriacou Island in Grenada, with 90% of homes destroyed and 1 fatality, 95% of the island is also without power. In Barbados, at least 20 fishing vessels have been damaged as a result of the storm.

The report further mentions that authorities have issued a hurricane warning in Jamaica, as heavy rains are expected along with winds of up to 160mph. This warning also applies to the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
