Wildfires In New Mexico

New Mexico is a state in the Southwestern region of the United States with a population of 2.1 million residents as of 2020. It is bordered by Texas, Oklahoma, and the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Sonora.

According to multiple reports, two wildfires burned through thousands of acres in New Mexico, resulting in 1 fatality and over 500 structures destroyed. The South Fork Fire and the Salt Fire, as they have been called, started on Monday, June 17, 2024. Both fires have burned over 14,000 acres and 5,500 acres of land, respectively, with 0% containment and have led to the evacuation of at least 5,000 residents.

The report further mentions that a state of emergency has since been declared and evacuation orders have been issued to the Village of Ruidoso and other areas. Emergency response teams have been deployed along with firefighters to contain the fire.
