Cholera is a bacterial infection caused by Vibrio cholerae. It is It is transmitted through contaminated food, water, or direct contact with infected individuals. It can lead to severe diarrhea, dehydration, and, if left untreated, can result in death.
According to reports, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported about 1,141 suspected cases and 65 confirmed cases of cholera with 30 deaths across 30 states in the country.
States with the highest number of cases are Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Kastina, Imo, Nasarawa, and Lagos.
In Lagos, a recent outbreak of cholera has resulted in 60 hospitalizations and 15 recorded deaths. This outbreak is believed to be a result of a lack of proper clean water, sanitation, and possible water contamination.
The Lagos State Ministry of Health has confirmed the outbreak in Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Kosofe local government areas.
