New Caledonia is a French overseas territory located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, with a population of 271,407 residents as of 2019. New Caledonia is also famous for its nickel deposits, which contribute significantly to its economy.
According to reports, the French government has banned TikTok in New Caledonia as part of measures to contain violent protests that have rocked the island over the past 3 days due to voting changes.
A state of emergency has since been declared due to the unrest, which has led to the destruction of businesses and cars. There have been 4 fatalities and more than 300 people injured. Over 130 people have also been arrested since the violence began.
Security forces have been deployed to regain control and restore order to the island.
