India, the most populous country in the world as of 2023 with over 1.4 billion residents, is currently at the polls for its 18th general elections that will last up to 6 weeks.
According to reports, about 969 million people are eligible to vote between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition coalition, Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). The BJP aims to secure a third consecutive term, while the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), a coalition of over a dozen opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress, seeks to dethrone the BJP.
As a result of India’s massive population, the electoral process will take place in 7 phases in some states over the next 6 weeks while others will cast their ballots electronically in one day.
