Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) is a subsidiary of Amazon that provides on-demand cloud computing platforms to individuals, companies, and governments on a metered, pay-as-you-go basis. Its web services were founded in 2002, and its cloud computing unit was established in 2006.
According to reports, AWS has announced plans to lay off hundreds of employees in its physical stores, technology, and sales and marketing units. This is a result of a strategic shift aimed at focusing its efforts on the key areas that the company believes will deliver maximum impact. The layoff comes after Amazon said it would remove the self-checkout systems called Just Walk Out from its U.S. stores.
