Kia has issued a recall of 427,407 vehicles due to a transmission problem that can cause the car to roll away while in park. According to the notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the shaft assembly may not be fully engaged due to suspected improper assembly by the supplier.
Over time, partial engagement can cause damage to the intermediate shaft splines, which may result in unintended vehicle movement while in Park if the parking brake is not engaged, and can increase the risk of a crash. Affected vehicles include: 2020-2024 Kia Telluride.
Owners have been advised to take their vehicles to a dealership if they notice a grinding noise or reduced motive power. Dealers will have an updated electronic parking brake software installed and check for damage in the shaft and have it replaced free of charge, with notification letters scheduled to be sent in May 2024.
