Haiti: 12 Killed in Unrest

The republic of Haiti, formerly known as Hayti, is a country on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. It is the third largest country in the Caribbean by area, covering 10,714 sq mi. With a population of 11.4 million residents as of 2023, the capital is Port-au-Prince. It is bordered by the Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Colombia, Cuba, and Jamaica.

According to reports, a jailbreak in Port-au-Prince prison and another in Croix des Bouquets, carried out by armed gang members, has led to the death of at least 12 people and the escape of around 3,700 inmates. The government has since declared a 3-day state of emergency as a result of the unrest.

The report further states that the increased violence comes at a time when the prime minister traveled to Nairobi to discuss sending a Kenyan-led security force to tackle the gang wars that have killed thousands in the country since 2020.
