Apple, the multinational technology company, has been fined a total of $1.95 billion USD (€1.8 billion Euro) by the European Commission. This fine was imposed on the technology giant for supposedly abusing its dominant position in the music streaming distribution market.
According to the report, Apple restricted iOS application developers from informing users about other music subscription services. An act that is reportedly illegal under EU antitrust laws. The report further mentions that iOS developers were prevented from including links to alternative music subscription options in their applications.
Investigations into Apple’s restrictions on the App Store was formally initiated in June 2020. The commission emphasizes that market dominance is not illegal in the EU but dominant companies have a responsibility of maintaining a fair competitive landscape.
