China: 20 killed in Landslide

Yunnan is a landlocked province in southwestern China. The province spans approximately 152,000 sq mi and has a population of 48.3 million residents as of 2018. It is bordered by Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi, and Tibet, as well as Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar.

According to reports, a landslide in Zhaotong, the northeastern region of Yunnan province, has resulted in at least 20 fatalities, 24 people missing, and more than 500 people evacuated from their homes. Investigations by authorities suggested that the landslide resulted from a collapse in a steep cliff measured at approximately 100m in width and 60m in height.

About 1,000 emergency responders are on the scene to aid in search and rescue operations in freezing conditions.
