Mauritius: Cyclone Belal Makes Landfall

The Republic of Mauritius is an island country in the Indian Ocean, 1,100 nautical miles off the southeastern coast of East Africa. It has a population of over 1.2 million residents as of 2019. The capital and largest city is Port Louis. It is bordered by Rodrigues, Agalega islands, Reunion, and St. Brandon.

According to recent reports, at least 1 person has died in Mauritius and another in Reunion as a result of a storm that has been classified as a cyclone. The storm caused severe damage to infrastructure, cars, and roads in the capital of Port Louis.

The international airport was closed due to the storm, with more than 1,000 people evacuated to safer locations and about 8,400 people without power. The report further mentions that emergency responders are still trying to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Belal.
