Mexico has commenced the construction of a train line that seeks to connect Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo. This project will supposedly cover about 1,500 kilometers in the Southeastern region of Mexico, with about 20 stations set to be commissioned.
The train is owned by Olmeca-Maya-Mexica (OMM), a state controlled company founded in 2022, and operations are managed by the country’s National Tourism Fund.
The Mayan train as it is being referred to, is a $28.5 billion USD project that will offer passenger transportation, tourist destination coverages, and cargo transportation to the people of Mexico. Boasting of 42 carriages, the Mayan train will also include a restaurant with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
According to the inaugural announcement of the new train line by the Mexican Government, the first stage of this expensive investment is now open to the public with the initial route connecting Campeche to Cancun. The report further mentions that less popular destinations like Palenque, Chichén Itzá and Tulum, that are equally tourist worthy will become easily accessible with the new train.
In 2023, Incognito Blog wrote about a trip to Tulum.
