Queensland is a state in northeastern Australia and the third most populous of the Australian states, with a population of over 5.3 million residents as of 2022. It is bordered by the Northern Territory, South Australia, New South Wales, the Coral Sea, the Pacific Ocean, and the Torres Strait.
Cairns is a city on the tropical northeast coast of Queensland, Australia. It has a population of 169,312 residents as of 2023 and is supposedly the 5th most populous in Queensland. Remnants of a category 4 tropical cyclone, Jasper, that made landfall last week has caused severe flooding across Cairns and several parts of Queensland. This unusual storm is a result of the El NiƱo weather phenomenon.
According to reports, over 300 people were rescued in and around Cairns on Sunday, with a number of people still stranded on building rooftops. The Cairns Airport was closed over the weekend, and all flights were canceled. A passenger plane was half underwater, and several other infrastructure damages occurred around the region as a result of the floods.
Additionally, 15,000 homes were without power and authorities have warned residents in flood-hit areas to be cautious of reptiles in floodwaters. Emergency response teams have been dispatched to affected areas. Earlier this month, Incognito Blog reported the El Nino effect on East Africa.
