General Motors has announced workforce reduction efforts at 2 of the company’s assembly plants in Michigan, USA. The lay offs will affect 945 employees from the Orion assembly plant and an additional 369 from the Lansing Grand River plant. This workforce restructure will supposedly take place in 2024.
Employees of General Motors are members of the United Auto Workers (UAW), a trade union that advocates for the fair treatment of automotive manufacturing workers. In September 2023, Incognito Blog reported the strike action by the union that led to a combined loss of over $1 billion USD amongst the 3 vehicle manufacturers involved, including General Motors. The strike was subsequently called off.
According to CNN, this layoff will affect members of the UAW, but the agreement between the union and the vehicle manufacturer will enable all impacted team members secure new positions at different divisions of the company.
