Cristiano Ronaldo: $1 Billion Lawsuit

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, popularly known as Cristiano Ronaldo, is a professional footballer who made his international debut for Portugal in 2003 at 18 years old. Ronaldo has won about 34 trophies in his career, including 5 UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Champions Leagues.

In 2018, he signed for Juventus for over $100 million USD, the most expensive transfer for an Italian club at that time. Ronaldo was also named the world’s highest paid athlete by Forbes in 2016, 2017, and 2023, and boasts of being the first footballer to earn $1 billion USD in his career.

According to recent reports, Cristiano Ronaldo is currently facing a $1 billion USD class action lawsuit for promoting unregistered securities like non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on Binance. The lawsuit claims the athlete allowed his name and influence to be used in connection with Binance’s deceptive product promotions.

Binance Holdings Ltd, commonly referred to as Binance, is a cryptocurrency exchange company that was founded in 2017, with no official headquarter. In 2021, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) started an investigation into the company’s activities on allegations of money laundering and tax offenses. In November 2023, US authorities fined the company over $4 billion USD for allowing transactions linked to child sex abuse, narcotics, and terrorist financing. The company’s founder also faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $200 million USD fine.
