Japan: Plane Crash in Yakushima Island

Yakushima is an Island in Kagoshima, Japan with a population of about 11,600 residents as of 2022. The Island can only be accessed using a hydro ferry, slow car ferry, or by air. Electricity in the area is generated mostly using hydro power and it has become a test site for Honda’s hydrogen fuel cell vehicle research.

Yakushima is the largest nesting area of the endangered loggerhead sea turtles in the North Pacific, and attracts over 300,000 tourists annually.

According to recent reports, a military aircraft carrying multiple passengers crashed off the shores of the island with one fatality reported so far. The aircraft has been identified as a CV-22 Osprey hybrid plane and was supposedly heading to the Kadena base from the Iwakuni base in western Yamaguchi.
