Bristol: $278 million Isambard-AI Investment

Bristol is a city and ceremonial county located in the South West region of England, with an estimated population of over 400,000 residents as of 2021. According to historic reports, Bristol had a prominent stake in the transatlantic slave trade of the 17th century. The estimated number of enslaved Africans traded by Bristol merchants was over 500,000, and in the year 1750 alone, Bristol ships transported about 8,000 enslaved Africans to North America and British Caribbean.

On November 1st, the Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary of England’s Government announced a £225 million pounds ($278 million USD) investment to build AI supercomputers in Bristol. The Isambard-AI as it is being called, will be the most advanced computer in the region and is said to be situated in the University of Bristol.

The computer is reportedly going to be 10 times faster than the Country’s current quickest machine and will be used to analyze artificial intelligence (AI) models to further drive discoveries in clinical breakthroughs and clean energy. Isambard-AI is set to be up and running in 2024.
