Canada bans WeChat from Government Devices

WeChat is a Chinese social media, instant messaging, and mobile payment app developed by Tencent. It is a popular application in China and Southeast Asia, and has been described as the “everything app.” First released in 2011, it became the world’s largest standalone mobile app in 2018 with over 1 billion monthly active users.

According to the BBC, Canada’s treasury board has announced an immediate ban of WeChat on government devices. This decision comes after a security review of the app and a risk-based approach to cybersecurity . Government agencies in the state will have the app removed and will be blocked from downloading it in the future.
