A moon landing is the touchdown of a spacecraft on the surface of the moon, irrespective of human crewed or robotic missions, both of these are considered a moon landing if there is contact with the moon. The first successfully reported unmanned mission (Luna 2) to the moon was by the Soviet Union in September 1959. Following the success of the Soviet’s mission, the United States of America sent the first crewed spacecraft (Apollo 11) to the moon in July 1969.
Till date, 12 people have landed on the moon.
On August 23 2023, India joined the list of Countries that have successfully completed a moon landing mission. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) landed its Chandrayaan-3 unmanned spacecraft at the lunar south pole. This is the southernmost point of the moon, and no other Country has gotten to this point, until now.
