Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp, is currently facing a lawsuit of about $600 million USD for non-compliance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The suit was filed by an association of newspaper owners in Spain named AMI.
According to recent reports, Meta disregarded the legal requirement requiring citizens to give their consent before collecting and using their data for advertising purposes. In May 2023, Meta was also fined €1.2 billion Euros by the Data Protection Commission of Ireland for similar violations.
