Eid al-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is an important Islamic holiday that commemorates the unwavering faith and obedience of Abraham to God’s command, as well as the mercy and provision of the Almighty.
In accordance with Islamic tradition, Abraham received a directive from God to demonstrate his faith by sacrificing his son. Willingly prepared to carry out this command, Abraham’s act was halted by God, who substituted his son with a lamb.
Muslims around the world mark this occasion by offering a sacrificial animal, such as a goat, sheep, or cow. This act emulates Abraham’s readiness to give up what is dear to him for the sake of God. The meat from the sacrificed animal is usually shared with families, friends and the less privilege.
Eid al-Adha is a time of unity, compassion, kindness, and generosity. Mosques are filled with worshippers, offering prayers of thanksgiving and seeking forgiveness. Streets are adorned with decorations, and the air is filled with the spirit of joy and goodwill.
In addition to the festivities, Nigeria has declared public holidays today June 28 and tomorrow June 29, to mark the importance of the season.
