Kidnappings in Matamoros, Mexico

Matamoros, known as Heroica Matamoros, is a city in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, and the municipal seat of the homonymous municipality. It is on the southern bank of the Rio Grande, directly across the border from Brownsville, Texas, United States. Matamoros is the second largest city in the state of Tamaulipas.

Matamoros is one of the Countries major historical sites, the center of several battles and events of the Mexican War of Independence, the Mexican Revolution, the Texas Revolution, the Mexican–American War, the American Civil War, and the French Intervention that allowed the city to earn its title of “Undefeated, Loyal, and Heroic”.

According to recent reports from CNN, a group of gunmen in northeastern Mexico assaulted and kidnapped four US citizens on Friday 3 March 2023, but it appears that the Americans were not the intended targets. According to officials, the cartel responsible for the incident likely mistook them for Haitian drug smugglers. The official further noted that there was no evidence of any criminal history on the part of the Americans and the group had traveled to Matamoros for medical reasons, as evidenced by receipts found in their vehicle.

The victims drove into Matamoros on Friday and were fired upon by unknown gunmen who then took the victims in a different vehicle and fled the scene.

The FBI is soliciting the public’s assistance in locating the kidnapped victims and identifying those responsible. The agency announced a cash reward of $50,000 for their return and the arrest of those involved.
